This lion was carved in full 3D relief, mane flowing outward in long sweeping lines with small leaves and a curling vine scattered around him, all framed in a raised molding border carved from the same board. Every strand of hair and every fold around the eyes was shaped individually, so the depth changes as you move past it and the light catches different ridges of the mane.
